Min tur til København (och min dag i Malmö)

Today started off a bit early as I had to be at the station to pick up the train to Malmö. I headed out to the metro and got off at the station and found some breakfast and a drink for the train.

The journey was a bit strange as once you crossed the Øresund Bridge and got to Hyllie station you had to wait for border checks to be completed. A while ago Denmark closed that border with Sweden due to the migrant influx from Syria. Due to this, border guards came on checking our ID’s. It was quite surreal to have to do that in mainland Europe. The process was pretty swift and took about 10 minutes in all.

Once I got to the station, I headed out to find some places to visit and take pictures. I was under the impression that Malmö had trams (you will see from one of the pictures of a bus that it looks like it could be a tram), but I was wrong.

I walked to a part of the harbour where I saw some photo opportunities. I didn’t stay here too long as it was cold and I was in shorts and no jacket (I know, I know). I then went to get something to drink and a bus ticket for the day so I could venture further out than the Old Town.

Once I had done that, I then ventured into the Old Town and headed towards Sankt Petri kyrka to visit that and work out from there.

Once I was done inside, I had a quick look at the map to ensure I was going in the direction that I wanted and went to Karl X Gustav statue. I took some pictures here as it was a picturesque little square. I also had in mind a place I wanted to go after here, and that was towards Malmö Slott. I walked around the cobbled streets and found my way to a park near the castle and then headed to the castle. As it turns out, it was just a museum. I found a scooter and had a ride around the grounds and then along the river and back towards the main station to get some food.

I had my Subway and sat on the train platform whilst I had that and then ventured out on the bus to an area called Triangeln. It looked picturesque on the map and it didn’t disappoint. I spent a couple of hours here just wandering around taking pictures. I did my obligatory nugget and wifi stop before heading back out on the bus to see what I could find.

I found somewhere and got off the bus and had a wander and then headed back to the bus towards Gustav Adolfs Torg and had a wander around there and a look around the cemetery that was there. I spent about an hour here and this is where I was fleeced because I was a tourist.

The owner has no morals and refuses to provide receipts or prices until you have paid and by then it is too late. I fell into the trap and paid about 4/5 times more than I would have had I looked around properly.[/box]

Once I was done here, I then jumped back on the bus and headed to a part of the city down by the water for some pictures and to see the tower block they call the Turning Torso. Such an awesome looking building. It is massive too.

Once I was done here, it was time to head back to the station to head back and get some sleep ready for sightseeing back in Copenhagen.

I got to have a little bit of a lie-in today as the sightseeing bus didn’t start from the stop closest to where I was until 09:35. That gave me time to souvenir shop and get some breakfast too. I had a really lovely cinnamon roll from the cafe by the bus stop.

I got on the bus and was the only one on so I could put the window down to get some good pictures. I thought I would stay on the bus and go all the way around once but it didn’t turn out like that. I got to St. Alban’s Church and the Gefion Fountain and got off here so I could have a look around. I had 30 minutes to do this before the next bus turned up.

I got back on the bus and sat at the back so I could have the window down to take some pictures that wouldn’t have reflections in them. We got to The Little Mermaid and got out and got some pictures. I then got back on where I left off and as we were going round I was looking for places to go when the sightseeing bus stopped running.

Part of the way round a group got on and almost immediately complained that it was cold on the bus and demanded that I put the window up. I told them I was taking pictures and I was promptly told if I wanted to take pictures I should get off the bus. Fast forward 5 minutes and they all started again this time telling me if I didn’t put up the window they would. I was rude and told them to shut up – nothing short of what they deserved. I told them I was getting off at the next stop and I would close it then. I was hounded off the bus by them. The stupid old woman clapped when I put the window up and got off. I wanted to snap her hands off. It put my plans off for about an hour. For the rest of the day when I heard Spaniards and Germans I just pushed past them not caring what they were doing – thank your fellow country people!

I had a wander around where I got off until the next bus and then got on that and went to the first stop to get some hot food. As I was doing this, I had a deja-vu moment and realised where I was at was the place Jamie and I found some money in an ATM when we were here on our cruise. You can read about this trip here.

Once I was done here, I hopped back on the bus and headed to where the cathedral and town squares where. I was having deja-vu here but wasn’t sure if it was from the cruise or not – it turns out it was. It was where they had Eurovision Square when we were there. I had a walk from here to the City Hall and then picked up the bus to the first stop so I could get on the boat and have a trip along the canals.

Once we were done here, I stayed on until it went back to the New Harbour again and got off to go get some food. I then found a scooter and headed to some of the places I had seen from the bus that I wanted to go back to. I was on the scooter for about 30 minutes. I then headed back towards the City Hall and had a wander around there and sat and watched the lights at night and took some pretty good night shots by the station. I then headed back to the hostel to get some much-needed rest and sleep.

Yesterday I decided that one of the places I wanted to see was Vor Frelsers Kirke. I saw that the tower opened at 10 so I decided that I would head there for that time so I could be one of the first in. It turned out to be a good idea as the queue later was pretty long.

If you do go to Copenhagen, this should be on your list. Whilst the 92 metres, 400 step climb might sound like a lot, the views are totally worth it. My advice would be to go when it opens as you can get a pretty good start on the climb up and you aren’t waiting for tons of people before you going up or people coming down.

I must admit that my legs were like jelly as I got right to the top. It was so high and I felt a bit sick. I’m not sure if it was the height, the climb or both. I’d probably say it was both. After I came down, I decided to wait until the church opened so I could have a look in. It turns out it was closed for a few more hours for a baptismal service. It worked out quite well as it gave me time to do the other 2 sightseeing bus routes. I got a bus to the central station and got on one of the routes. As I was time constrained I stayed on and took pictures from the bus.

We got back to the starting point and I crossed the road and got the other bus and did the same due to the time constraints. I did scout out some places to go back to once the routes were finished and I had seen the church. I got the bus to the stop for the boat and then walked across the bridge back to the church. I thought my luck was out again as there was a wedding. It turns out it had just finished so I had time to go in and have a look around.

Once I had done this, I jumped on the metro and headed to Marmorkirken. It was closed for the rest of the day so I got some food and then headed towards Nyboden. This area has rows of small houses painted orange that was for the sailors. The story goes that they brought back porcelain dogs and if the dogs were facing each other then the sailors were home. If the dogs were facing away from each other then the sailor wasn’t home and it was clear for the wives to have extracurricular activities whilst the husband was at sea.

Once I was done here, I hopped on the metro to get some dinner and head to the hostel as I had a stupidly early start for the flight home.

I made sure to check with the metro staff when the metro will start again for the airport and the Copenhagen Metro runs 24/7 though less frequent between 23:00 and 05:00
