Perjalanan seterusnya ialah Kuala Lumpur

15 Minutes

The next stop on this trip was Kuala Lumpur. I had booked a week in Singapore and then a week here in Kuala Lumpur.

Truth be told, I didn’t have any idea what I was going to do for the 7 days here. Ken did ask why I had chosen such a long time here. I knew I didn’t want to spend the majority of the trip in Singapore so I tried to split it equally between the two.

I had originally booked a hostel and it was a pod hostel. I tried to convince Ken that it would be good but he wasn’t having any of it so we looked for an Airbnb. They were far cheaper than the hotels. We booked one that looked good and just waited for the time to arrive.

The flight from Singapore was due to leave at 14:30 on the 14th. I told him it was a turboprop and I could see his face drop. I had never been on one but he had and he didn’t like it. I told him that we got a checked bag as well as a carry-on and I told him that the reason for this was that if the flight crashed they wouldn’t have to claim that we were on the plane. He didn’t take that joke too well. He’s not a good flyer. I mostly said it to see his reaction – I’m THAT good of a friend. Haha.

We left our carry-on bags at the hotel in Singapore as we were going back to stay with them anyway before we headed home.

  • Day 1

We got to a smaller airport in Singapore with plenty of time for our flight. As has been the case with other parts of the trip, the flight was delayed. It ended up being delayed by 2 hours. I was really annoyed as I wanted to just get to Kuala Lumpur so we could start exploring the city and I was desperate for some food and drink. I brought some snacks with me but they were awful. The crisps I got were called prawn crackers and they were horrible. The taste was truly awful. I had Ken try them so he could experience the joy with me. I emptied them in the bin and washed my mouth out to get rid of the awful taste. Did I tell you they tasted horrible? No. Well, they tasted bloody awful.

We finally boarded the plane and I was somewhat apprehensive as I have never flown on a turboprop before and the only time I had seen them was on Air Crash Investigation. It ended up being an uneventful flight – which was fine by me.

We got to a smaller airport in Kuala Lumpur and proceeded to immigration. The guy asked me what my travel plans were whilst I was in Malaysia and I told him and then he asked the same of Ken and then he asked Ken if we were travelling together. Just like that, I got a stamp in the new passport and I was sent on my way. We picked up our bags and headed out but not before having to put our bags through a security check. Not sure why we had to do this since we did it in Singapore. Very weird. Oh well, their country and their rules.

We found a Starbucks and sat and chilled for an hour or so. I went and got some food and something to drink. It was nice to just be off the plane and chill. I was looking on the Grab app to see how close a driver was and they were about 15 minutes away. I went ahead and booked it as I just wanted to get to the accommodation so I could drop my stuff off and just relax for a little bit. It seemed to take forever to get to the Airbnb. Ken tried to have a conversation with the driver along the way but it didn’t go well as he didn’t seem to understand much English. At one point, Ken asked him what a tower was that we saw and I think he thought he was asking to take pictures as he started to wind the window down.

We got to the Airbnb and there was some confusion about which apartment we were supposed to have. We got sent some messages that showed 2 different apartments. Floor 20 and Floor 9. I was super stressed at this point as I wanted to know which one was specifically ours and the host wasn’t answering messages I sent.

We went to the one on Floor 20 and the views were amazing. It didn’t look like the pictures so we went back down and got the keys for floor 9 and then headed to that one. This was the right one. I told Ken I was taking the big bed and it was nice to plonk everything down and just relax for a little bit.

One thing about this apartment block is that you needed a QR code to get above the 6th floor. The QR code was floor specific and you could only get to the floor that was programmed in the code. I thought that was pretty cool and pretty secure.

Once we had dropped our stuff off and sufficiently relaxed we headed out. I saw a 7-Eleven and this began my Slurpee overdose for this trip. We got something to eat too and then headed towards where we saw a lot of people going. We turned a corner and it was a street market. I went to find an ATM so I could get some souvenirs and cash for my collection. We carried on walking and came to an area called Bukit Bintang which was a very lively and happening place. There were singers there and a massive crowd around them. It was cool to see. We also found a McDonald’s and went and sat inside to have some much-needed food.

You can hear the singers in the videos below. It was fun to stand there and listen. I love stuff like this.

We then headed back to the Airbnb so we could get some sleep ready for a full day of being a tourist tomorrow.

  • Day 2

We ended up having a lie-in today as we were both so tired. We finally got up and got ready and headed out to go explore. I had an idea of where I wanted to go so we headed in that sort of direction. It was good to just walk around as we were able to take some side streets and see what was there. We came across a side street that had a church and the tower that Ken asked about in the background. As we were walking back to the main road we came across a 7-Eleven and I went in and got some drinks and chocolate and a Slurpee.

We carried on towards the main road and just walked in whatever direction we felt like. I was looking at the map every now and then to see where we were and what was around. We came across a street called Jalan Petaling (Jalan means street). This was in the heart of Chinatown and there was a market there. We walked into it and it was fairly dead. It was a market that came alive at night so I suggested to Ken that we come back here in the evening once it was more lively so we could see what was on offer.

We headed back out and carried on walking across the road. We came by the Central Market and I wanted to go in and see what souvenirs they had. I had already gotten the magnets but they didn’t have any flags or lanyards. We carried on out of here and came to a river that they called the River of Life. The proper name is the Klang River. There was a mosque on the other side of it that looked pretty cool. I saw there was a McDonald’s close by and we wanted food (or I did rather) so we stopped by there to see if they did breakfast but they didn’t. Ken got us a seat whilst I waited for the food. I got the food and went downstairs and as I went to put the tray on the table I dropped it and spilt the drink all over the floor. I went back upstairs to get another drink and then went back down to eat. We sat for about 45 minutes before we headed back out.

We crossed the street as I wanted to go see the mosque but for some reason, I couldn’t find the way in. We walked around and came to a pedestrian bridge that we crossed and we came to Merdeka Square. It was a pretty big square with some ornate buildings around it and it had a massive flagpole and flag there too. Merdeka Square is where the Malaysian flag was raised to replace the Union Jack and this signified an end to British colonial rule of Malaya. The flag was raised at 12:01 on August 31st 1957. We walked around here for a little bit before heading back towards the metro station by McDonald’s. We wanted to go by the Petronas Towers and see about tickets. On our way, we found a 7-Eleven and it was sandwich time for Ken and Slurpee time for me.

We got to Masjid Jamek metro station and bought our tokens to get on the metro and headed to KLCC metro station. We could have walked there but my feet were killing and blisters were forming on blisters and I didn’t want any more. We got off the metro and headed outside. We weren’t sure where the tower was so we asked someone and he pointed right in front of us and said that they were the towers. We went inside and went to ask about tickets and he said they had sold out for that day but that some were available for tomorrow. We went and queued and got some for first thing in the morning as we were airport bound in the afternoon. Now that we had tickets, we headed out to get something to eat and drink. I said there was a place outside where you could get some pictures of the towers so we went outside and got some pictures. I think we were there for about 30 minutes doing that.

After we were done there we went back to the mall to get some more drinks and then headed back to the metro station to go to the night market. Ken loved being there. He was interested in the trainers so we spent some time looking at them before we headed back to the Airbnb for the night. We went via 7-Eleven to get some drinks and more Slurpees for me. I think I had 6 in all today. I was definitely ready for some different drinks after all of them. They are just so good though.

We got back to the Airbnb and just sat and chilled and watched some street food videos on YT for a while knowing full well we had to be up early-ish for the Petronas Towers. Luckily all I had to pack was a couple of days worth of clothes and toiletries.

  • Day 3

We got up with enough time to walk to the metro and also get some food before we had to be at the towers. They are quite strict with the tickets and if you turn up after your time slot they won’t let you in and won’t offer an exchange or refund. I didn’t want to risk it. I get quite anal about time and I’m pretty sure it annoys most people I know that I am like this.

We headed to the towers and we were let in 15 minutes early. They do it so weirdly. You get sent up in a coloured group and you stick with the group. They collect you from the lift on floor 83 where the double-deck bridge is. The lower deck is for tourists and the upper deck is for workers. They give you 15 minutes here and then call your group to get in the lift to go up to the 86th floor. These are where the best views are found. We had 15 minutes here and then were sent back down to floor 83 as a group. They then usher you to try and get you to buy souvenirs. They do photos of you before you go in the lift on the ground floor and then they try and sell them for an obscene amount of money. It was around RM170 (which is about £32) – no, thanks.

We left the towers and went for something to drink before heading back to the Airbnb to pick up our bags and head to the airport. I wanted to get the train to save money on Grab but it turned out that Grab was actually cheaper by about a tenner.

  • Day 4

Today we decided that we would go to the Batu Caves. I showed Ken a picture of it before we left on the trip and we both said it looked cool and we wanted to go there. We left the Airbnb and headed to the metro to go to KL Sentral train station to change to get the train to the caves. We had plenty of time to kill so we had food and coffee and sat for an hour or so before we headed to the train to the caves. As I was going to get on the train a guard told me that the carriage I was trying to get on was for women only so I went to the next carriage. I saw a forward-facing seat but some stupid couple rushed to get it before me and I wanted to punch the stupid smug look off their faces and then push them under the train. It annoyed me and I may have called them some rude swear names.

We got to the station and as we got off the train I could see the huge golden statue. I was telling Ken that they have monkeys here and they come up to you and aren’t scared of people. It really was true too. They just didn’t care about people – especially if they had food. All they cared about was getting food and not sharing it with the other monkeys. I was mesmerised by them and tried to get as many pics and videos as I could. You can see them in the videos below.

We wandered around more towards the steps to get up to the cave and took some more pics of the monkeys. One of the ones I was taking a picture of was eating and as I stepped closer it put its head down and towards me and showed its teeth. I stepped back and it was less afraid again. I just wanted a picture and not the food (even if I was slightly hungry).

You can’t take food here and eat it because you will be surrounded by the monkeys and they will try to snatch it from you – as it did with one guy who was dumb enough to walk around with a banana. Silly man.

We carried on walking and got to the steps to get up to the caves. They were steep and plentiful. I don’t think pictures do them justice. You can tell for yourself in the picture below.

There are around 275 steps from the bottom to the cave at the top. Once I was up there I had a sit down as I was sweating and out of breath. It was really dirty at the top. The rubbish bins were overflowing. If I am honest, as cool as it looks at the top, it was a little underwhelming to be there. I was expecting more – I guess this is why this is the free cave. I mean, it was still cool to be there and see it. The other 2 caves were closed so we couldn’t go in even if we wanted to.

We sat up the top and Ken was approached by some people who asked to have a picture with him and he obliged. It’s like Ken was the zoo animal. Haha. We walked up some more stairs to get to the top of the cave. The views really were awesome though – even if it was underwhelming to be up there. We sat up here for about an hour and then headed back to the bottom and back to the train to get back to the city. The views of the city on the way down were really cool – as you can see in the pic below.

Once we were back in the city we headed to the night market on Petaling Street so we could look at trainers and whatever else they had. We both ended up buying trainers as they were super cheap. I don’t usually wear Nike but I got myself a pair and they were really comfortable – I tried one on before I bought them and the comfort swayed me to buy them. We headed back to the Airbnb to pack everything up as we had to be at the airport to go back to Singapore.

Below are some pics from today

We went to Kuala Lumpur Sentral station so we could get a train to the airport. We had seen there was a train line by the airport so we thought we could just get the train. We got to the station and I asked someone and they sent me to a desk as they thought I had meant KLIA2 even though I said Subang airport. I went and ordered some food from McDonald’s as Ken was having his coffee. I went to the counter they said I should try and the guy there said I needed to go upstairs to check for tickets. I did this and I was told the train didn’t go to Subang airport any more so we had to get there with Grab.

I went and picked up my food and went to Starbucks and they had gotten my order wrong. I went back and asked them to sort it and they took ages and I had to ask what was going on and they sorted my order and it was wrong again. I had to wait another 10 minutes. I was so annoyed. Grrr. Anyway, we had our coffee and food and booked a Grab.

We got to the airport with time to spare and chilled outside for about 90 minutes. Ken was having coffee and I went and got some food and then went to have a look at a gadget shop there as I was on the lookout for a wireless/Bluetooth speaker for my desk. I picked one off the shelf and looked at it and the shopkeeper came right up behind me so I went to put it back on the shelf and he told me not to and that he would do it. Such a princess.

We went to the queue for security and went through and then went to get some food and drink from the 7-Eleven. I looked to see where our gate was and it was the other side of the glass so we had to go back towards security and then towards the gate. We got stopped by security and were told we couldn’t have drinks but the food was ok. I was confused because we got the drinks from the shop on the right side of security. The guy said 3 or 4 times to Ken he couldn’t have liquids even though he said he didn’t have any. We had to go back through security before we were allowed to go to the gate. I hated that airport. I hope I never have to use it again.

We boarded and headed back to Singapore. The flight was a nice easy flight. Not much in the way of turbulence thankfully. We landed in Singapore Seletar and went to go through immigration but couldn’t get through the gates. It turns out we had to fill in a landing card again. I didn’t realise this. I was mad because I lost the boarding pass that I wanted to keep and nobody understood why it was an issue for me. Oh well.

All in all, Kuala Lumpur was a great trip too.
