Min resa till Stockholm (lite längre denna gång)

Less than 1 minute Minutes

I haven’t been to Stockholm since 2014. The time I spent there was with the ex and we only had around 8 hours here. It definitely wasn’t enough time to do very much. We did a sightseeing bus and a little bit of a walk around. You can read about that trip here.

I decided that since I had seen fares for £15 each way I would book it. It also coincided with the end of the good shifts and the start of the bad shifts. I needed a bit of a reset and I wanted to make my own memories of Stockholm and push the ones I had to the back burner.

The time came to leave for the airport and I am still so glad that there is a 03:05 coach towards the airport. I didn’t want to have to rest at the airport after a 12-hour shift.

I got to the airport and straight through security and just sat in the departure lounge until the gate was shown.

I boarded and as we were taxiing, the pilot said that there would be turbulence for the first 30 minutes of the flight (including the climb). I can’t tell you how overjoyed I was! There was a chap sitting next to me in the middle seat and the window seat was free. I told him he could sit there but he said he didn’t want to and I could if I wanted. He wasn’t so good on the take-off or landing. He chatted with me most of the flight too. I was glad when we landed as it meant I was closer to getting to the hostel and relaxing for a bit.

I had booked a coach to get from the airport to the city centre (it was cheaper than the train and only about 20 minutes longer). I got off the coach, had a quick look at the map to get my bearings and headed to the hostel to see if they would let me check in early. I sat in reception for 15 minutes before anyone even noticed I was there. Thankfully they saw me and they let me check in early. I got into the room and I quickly went back out as there was no cold air in the room and only a fan blowing the stale air around. There wasn’t even a window.

  • Day 1

I decided that I was going to have a walk around. I started to head towards the river and I just let my legs take me in that direction. I got to see the courthouse and the passport office. The passport office is a grandiose building.

I carried on walking and found the river and it was nice to just sit there for a few minutes and take in the sights and sounds and smells of being by the river. I had an idea of where I wanted to go and I headed in that direction. I saw the town hall and headed in that direction. It is a pretty cool building. Very big and ornate. They had gardens there that you can walk around and it was nice to walk around there in the sun. I sat there for a while and watched the people in the boats and people on wakeboards. It was nice to sit there and soak up the atmosphere.

After that, I then headed towards Gamla Stan and sat on the bridge there and watched the trains go by. It was nice to hear those too. I went across the other side and I walked up some stairs to the Riddarholmen Church. I had a quick walk around here and then crossed the bridge to the other side of Gamla Stan and enjoyed walking around there. There was a pretty cool yellow house that was a bit wonky. I love seeing stuff like that.

The walking around here was cool (though full of tourists). I still have no recollection of being here in 2014 (despite having pictures). Nothing seemed familiar. It was really weird that nothing was feeling familiar.

I headed to get some food and to rest my feet for a little bit. I went back to the hostel to drop some stuff off and charge my phone and then I headed back out to the metro and headed back to Kungsträdgården. I noticed that the metro stations are huge and decorated. It was nice to see they weren’t uniform and boring.

I walked around here and came to the area of the parliament and royal palace. It started to look familiar from this angle. I was here for about an hour listening to the water and watching people walk by. I then headed back to the hostel to get some much-needed rest.

  • Day 2

Today I decided I would head to the island where the museums are. I wanted to go pick up a couple of Abba souvenirs from the Abba Museum. I got the metro and then the tram. I totally missed the stop for the museum. I was in my own little world and didn’t see the museum right across from the tram stop. I got off at the next stop and had a walk back and I got to see some of the quaint buildings here.

I went into the gift shop, picked up my souvenirs and jumped back on the tram to the end of the line. It was nice to have a walk around here in the green and by the water. I got back on the tram at the next stop and went to the central station area and had a walk around. I was a little hungry so went to the embassy to get some sustenance.

I had seen a place on the map that was a pedestrian/cycle tunnel and the pictures from the surroundings looked pretty cool. I got there and it was pretty cool. I walked down some steps to get to the tunnel. I waited about 15 minutes to get a picture with no cyclists or pedestrians. I managed it. I walked through the tunnel and the cold air was very welcome.

I decided that I would take a walk back to the Nybroplan area as I had seen some buildings from the tram that I wanted to walk by. As I was walking down, I saw an ambulance from Ukraine and it was complete with bullet holes in it. It was really surreal to be this close to something that was involved in the war. It was also really sad to see how an ambulance would be targeted by the invaders.

I walked along the promenade and looked at the buildings I wanted to and then hopped on the tram back to the central station area so I could have a look at the church that was by the tram stop.

The church was open so the homeless could go in and get some shelter and some food. It was nice to see religion doing something good for a change. I went back to the hostel for an hour after I was done there. I needed to get rid of whatever stones were in my shoes and also to just have a recharge.

I went back out and then headed to a lookout point that one of the guys in the room suggested. I got the metro here and then walked up the street and climbed the rocks to get a good vantage point. It was really cool to see Stockholm from here. It gave some really good views. I didn’t stay long enough for the sunset. I wanted to go find some food and some souvenirs. I got the metro back to Central Station and then walked around to find some souvenirs. I found a lanyard for Ken. I, however, didn’t get one for me because I forgot to check my list. Ha.

I then walked around the parliament and royal palace area for a while before getting the metro back to the hostel to rest my weary body.

  • Day 3

Today was my last day and I was told by another guy in the hostel that my public transport card works on the commuter ferries. I decided to do just that. I got the metro and the tram to Nybroplan to pick up the ferry. It took about an hour to go from the first to the last stop.

I enjoyed being on it. There weren’t a lot of people on board so I was able to get some really cool pics. I could have stayed on all day. There’s just something cool about seeing a city from the water.

The ferry made the following stops: Allmänna gränd, Saltsjöqvarn, Finnboda hamn, Kvarnholmen, Blockhusudden, Nacka strand, Lidingö/Dalénum, Frihamnen, Ropsten (see the above map).

The ferry didn’t go past Ropsten as there was construction work going on and I didn’t go to the next pick-up point as I went to the metro instead. I got the metro to Slussen as I wanted to go see the Maria Magdalena church. It was a really cool church with a graveyard. The inside was pretty small but it was nice to see. The organ here is probably one of the most ornate I have seen. When I went inside, there was a service going on so I stood there for a few minutes until it had finished and then I walked around.

Once I was done here, I headed back out and went to the area of the public library (the same guy who suggested the ferry suggested this). The library is really cool. It has a rotunda in the centre with bookshelves all around on three levels. It is absolutely worth a visit if you are in Stockholm. Just up from the library is also Gustav Vasa church. It looks really huge. I went inside and it was pretty cool. I spoke with someone who worked there and she said that it can hold 1000 people. I was shocked. She also said that the church dates from the very early 1900s but the altar dates from the 17th century. The altar is very ornate and it is worth visiting the church just for this.

I then headed to the metro and found a supermarket to pick up some bits and pieces to bring home. I then headed back to the hostel and dropped them off then had a walk to the river and walked down the path towards the city hall. I then decided I would take a walk to another lookout point so I could get some shots of the sunset and the city at night. This was a little lower than the point yesterday but it was still a good vantage point.

Once the sun had set I decided to head back to the hostel as I had to be up at 04:00 to get ready to go and catch the 05:00 bus to the airport.

I got the bus to the airport (I tried to sleep but couldn’t). I got to the airport, found some food, and just relaxed until it was time to board. I managed to catch some sleep on the flight back. I went to get the train and had about an hour until the train was due to leave. I managed to get seats that I didn’t have to share. I was so glad when I was back in Peterborough. I went home and dropped my stuff off, had a shower and then headed out for some coffee.

All in all, Stockholm was a fantastic trip. It is definitely somewhere worthy of a visit. It’s also a very walkable city too. If you get the chance, I would highly recommend going.
